A developing and unusually intense El Niño pattern over the Pacific Ocean is raising serious concerns about its potential impact on India’s southwest monsoon, particularly across western states such as Gujarat and Goa. Meteorologists warn that the climate phenomenon could significantly disrupt rainfall patterns, worsening the already fragile water situation in these regions.
El Niño, a periodic warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, is known to weaken the Indian monsoon by altering atmospheric circulation. However, this year’s system—described by some experts as “exceptionally strong”—may have a more pronounced effect, leading to prolonged dry spells and uneven rainfall distribution.
According to weather scientists, Gujarat and Goa are among the most vulnerable areas.
