MUMBAI: Television couple Gaurav Khanna and Akanksha Chamola have found themselves at the center of a massive social media storm. Just days after Akanksha dropped a bombshell revelation regarding their split, heartbroken and confused fans have begun calling out the couple for maintaining a “fake” public image.
The controversy ignited during the high-profile premiere of the reality show Lock Upp Season 2, hosted by Farah Khan and Riteish Deshmukh. Akanksha, who entered the show as a contestant, chose to reveal a deep personal secret to the hosts and viewers.
“Okay, so me and Gaurav are getting a divorce,” Akanksha admitted on stage. “Yeah, we’ve been separated, living separately for the last one year. It wasn’t public, but that’s my secret.”
The Illusion of a Happy Marriage
What has triggered intense backlash online isn’t just the impending divorce itself, but the timeline of their separation. Fans quickly pointed out that over the past year—while secretly living apart—the Anupamaa fame actor and his wife continued to make loving public appearances.
Most notably, the couple celebrated their 9th marriage anniversary with highly visible, romantic gestures while Gaurav was a contestant on Bigg Boss. On social media, users have expressed a deep sense of betrayal, accusing the couple of scripting their affection for the cameras and the public eye.
“If they were already separated for a year, then what was that 9th-anniversary romance in BB? Seriously, itna fake,” wrote one disgruntled user on X (formerly Twitter). Another fan lamented, “Nowadays everyone is just acting; there is no real connection… It all turned out to be acting.”

Despite the growing internet fury, Akanksha maintained during her premiere appearance that the decision to part ways after nearly a decade together was entirely mutual. She emphasized that there is no animosity between them.
According to Akanksha, they kept the separation quiet to give themselves and their families space to process the reality.
The Reason: “We both don’t think that we are compatible as partners because we both see very different futures,” she explained, noting that they still remain on speaking terms.
The Family’s Stance: “Our parents thought we were just living separately for a while… everyone believed things would work out. But that feeling of being a married couple was no longer there.”
The revelation has also brought back viral clips from Gaurav’s recent stint on reality television, where he emotionally defended his wife’s choice to not have children against media scrutiny, claiming he would always respect her wishes over his own.
