The highly anticipated theatrical adaptation of the cult classic web series Mirzapur is proving to be a massive juggernaut at the ticket counters. Defying the traditional boundaries between streaming audiences and theatrical footfalls, Mirzapur: The Movie is all set to cross the coveted ₹100 crore net mark in India on its fourth day of release.
Starring Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Ravi Kishan, and Divyenndu, the crime thriller has capitalized on its established fan base to deliver one of the most remarkable opening weekends of the year.
A Roaring Opening Weekend
Directed by Gurmmeet Singh, the film opened to a thunderous ₹24.75 crore net in India on Friday, September 4, becoming one of Bollywood’s biggest non-star-led opening days. The momentum only accelerated through the weekend. The movie raked in ₹32 crore on Saturday and peaked on Sunday with an impressive ₹36 crore, bringing its total opening weekend net collection to a staggering ₹93.75 crore in the domestic market.
With just over ₹6 crore needed to hit the ₹100 crore milestone, trade analysts project the film will comfortably achieve this feat by Monday evening, despite the customary weekday dip.
Global Dominance
The film’s success isn’t limited to the Indian market. Mirzapur: The Movie has already crossed the ₹100 crore mark globally. With a strong overseas gross of ₹20 crore added to its domestic gross, the worldwide collection stood at a massive ₹132.35 crore at the end of its first weekend.
The Winning Formula
Produced by Excel Entertainment and Amazon MGM Studios, the film’s success stems from its strategic placement in the series’ timeline—set during the events of Season 1. This has allowed fan-favorite characters, including Munna Tripathi (Divyenndu), to return to the screen alongside Pankaj Tripathi’s formidable Kaleen Bhaiya and Ali Fazal’s vengeful Guddu Pandit. The addition of actor-politician Ravi Kishan to the changing power dynamics of the Mirzapur underworld has further drawn massive crowds to the theaters.
As it squares off against current releases like the Kannada action film Toxic and the spiritual drama Hanuman Ansh, the Mirzapur movie has made it clear that Kaleen Bhaiya’s reign at the box office is just beginning.
