Gaikwad’s Counter-Attack Resurrects CSK Chase After Samson’s Early Exit

CHENNAI – The “El Clasico” of the IPL lived up to its billing at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium as Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad shifted gears to stabilize the home side’s pursuit of 160. Following the early departure of the prolific Sanju Samson, Gaikwad’s aggressive intent has kept the Chepauk crowd on their feet.

Bumrah Strikes Early for Mumbai

Chasing a modest target of 160, CSK suffered an immediate setback when Mumbai Indians’ spearhead Jasprit Bumrah produced a clinical opening spell. Sanju Samson, who has been in scintillating form this season with over 300 runs, managed just 11 before falling to Bumrah in the second over. The dismissal briefly silenced the Yellow Army, threatening to derail the chase before it truly began.

Captain Gaikwad Leads the Charge

Unfazed by the loss of his opening partner, Ruturaj Gaikwad took the initiative. The CSK skipper welcomed the Mumbai pacers with a flurry of boundaries, including a signature pull for six and a precise cover drive for four that signaled his intent.

Alongside Urvil Patel, who was drafted into the side as a replacement for the injured Ayush Mhatre, Gaikwad has ensured the run rate remains well above the requirement. By the end of the powerplay, CSK had reached 62/1, comfortably ahead of the curve.

Mumbai Struggles with the Bat

Earlier in the evening, Mumbai Indians found the Chepauk surface difficult to navigate. Despite a gritty 57 from Naman Dhir, the MI heavyweights—including Hardik Pandya (18) and Suryakumar Yadav (21)—struggled against a disciplined CSK bowling attack.

Anshul Kamboj was the pick of the bowlers for Chennai, bagging 3/32, while Afghan spinner Noor Ahmad throttled the middle overs with figures of 2/26. A late cameo from Trent Boult helped MI crawl to 159/7, a total that now looks increasingly fragile under Gaikwad’s assault.

Current Status:

MI: 159/7 (20 overs)

CSK: 62/1 (5.3 overs)

Requirement: CSK need 98 runs from 14.3 overs.

With the dew factor expected to kick in and Gaikwad looking set at the crease, the Super Kings remain heavy favorites to clinch this Match 44 encounter.
