Geopolitics in Focus as BRICS Summit Opens in New Delhi

Source BBC

New Delhi: India assumed the global spotlight as it hosted a high-stakes BRICS summit in the national capital, bringing together leaders of some of the world’s most influential emerging economies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, among others, at a time when shifting geopolitical currents and economic uncertainties have raised questions about the future direction of the bloc.

The summit unfolded against the backdrop of intensifying global polarization and the looming influence of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s potential political resurgence. While not physically present, Trump’s shadow loomed large over the discussions, particularly in areas concerning global trade, security alignments, and the future of multilateral institutions. His previous administration’s approach to tariffs, strategic alliances, and global governance has left a lasting imprint, one that BRICS nations appear keen to factor into their long-term strategies.

India, as the host nation, sought to position itself as a bridge between competing global interests. Prime Minister Modi emphasized the need for greater cooperation among BRICS countries to address pressing challenges such as economic recovery, climate change, and technological disruption. In his opening remarks, he highlighted the importance of reforming global institutions to better reflect the realities of the 21st century, a long-standing demand of the bloc.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, attending amid continued tensions with the West, underscored the need for stronger economic partnerships within BRICS to counter what he described as unilateral sanctions and economic coercion. He called for increased use of local currencies in trade and deeper financial integration among member states.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, on the other hand, focused on the importance of stability in global supply chains and advocated for expanding the BRICS framework to include more countries from the Global South. He reiterated China’s support for a multipolar world order and emphasized cooperation over confrontation.

Despite the shared rhetoric, underlying tensions between member countries, particularly India and China, remained evident. Border disputes and strategic competition continue to cast a shadow over bilateral relations, even as both nations work together within the BRICS framework.

The summit also addressed the possibility of expanding BRICS membership, with several countries expressing interest in joining the bloc. This expansion could significantly alter the group’s global influence, potentially making it a more formidable counterweight to Western-led institutions.

Observers noted that India’s diplomatic balancing act would be crucial in ensuring the success of the summit. As a country that maintains strong ties with both Western powers and BRICS partners, India is uniquely positioned to mediate differences and foster consensus.

As the summit progresses, all eyes remain on the outcomes that could shape the future of global governance. With major powers navigating a rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape, the decisions made in New Delhi are likely to have far-reaching implications beyond the BRICS nations themselves.
