Government Overhauls LPG Supply Directives: Restores Commercial Fuel and Toughens Rules for PNG Households

Source The Hindu

NEW DELHI — The Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) has issued a major overhaul to India’s Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) distribution network, rolling out fresh directives that fundamentally alter how both commercial entities and domestic households access gas supplies.

The sweeping changes—triggered by an easing energy crisis and a strategic push toward cleaner alternatives—introduce strict compliance timelines for urban households and a complete reversal of supply curbs for businesses.

Here is a breakdown of the new directives and what changes for you starting this week.

1. Commercial and Industrial Consumers: Restoring Pre-Crisis Supplies

In a major relief to the hospitality, manufacturing, and commercial sectors, the central government has officially withdrawn all supply caps and restrictions on commercial LPG.

Back in March, a sudden escalation in the West Asia conflict forced the government to restrict non-domestic packed LPG distribution to safeguard domestic reserves. Simultaneously, raw components like propane and butane (C_3 and C_4 hydrocarbon streams) were strictly diverted away from industrial manufacturing to feed public kitchen fuel.

What Changes Now:

100% Supply Rebound: Non-domestic packed LPG distribution has been fully restored to pre-crisis levels.

Bulk Gas Eased: Bulk LPG supply caps have been doubled from their crisis-era lows, moving up to 50% of regular consumption capacity.

Industrial Manufacturing Restored: Chemical and manufacturing industries will see the return of standard hydrocarbon streams, as the government has dialed back the mandatory diversion of raw gas components to the domestic pool.

2. Domestic Kitchens: The Strict “One Household, One Gas” Policy

For residential consumers using Indane, BharatGas, or HP Gas, the latest mandates tighten the screws on energy duplication, targeting households located in areas with established Piped Natural Gas (PNG) infrastructure.
