Government Rules Out Immediate Plan to Remove LTCG Tax on Stock Market Gains

The central government has clarified that there is currently no proposal under consideration to scrap the Long-Term Capital Gains (LTCG) tax on equities, putting to rest recent speculation among investors and market participants.

In an official statement, the Finance Ministry indicated that no changes are being planned to the existing taxation framework governing capital gains from equity investments. The clarification comes amid growing discussions in financial circles about the possibility of easing tax burdens to boost retail participation in the stock market.

The LTCG tax on equities, which applies to gains arising from the sale of listed shares held for more than one year, was reintroduced in 2018. Currently, gains exceeding ₹1 lakh in a financial year are taxed at 10 percent without the benefit of indexation. The tax has been a subject of debate, with some industry experts arguing that it discourages long-term investment, while others believe it ensures a fair contribution to government revenues.

Officials emphasized that the existing tax regime strikes a balance between encouraging investments and maintaining fiscal discipline. They also noted that any potential changes to tax policies are carefully evaluated in the context of broader economic priorities and revenue considerations.

Market experts believe that while the government’s stance provides clarity in the short term, the debate around capital gains taxation is likely to continue. Investors, particularly retail participants, have been closely watching policy signals that could impact returns and overall market sentiment.

For now, the government’s message is clear: there is no immediate relief on LTCG tax for equity investors, and the current rules will remain in place.
