Government Set to Unveil High-Level Panel on ‘Banking for Viksit Bharat’

Source The Hindu

New Delhi: The central government is expected to soon announce the formation of a high-level panel to examine the future of India’s banking sector and suggest measures to make it better aligned with the vision of a “Viksit Bharat,” or developed India.

The proposed panel is likely to focus on strengthening the banking system, improving access to financial services and ensuring that banks are equipped to support India’s long-term economic growth. The initiative comes as the country seeks to expand its financial infrastructure alongside rising investment, digitalisation and growing credit demand.

The panel is expected to examine a wide range of issues, including the role of public and private sector banks, financial inclusion, technology adoption, regulatory frameworks and the ability of banks to meet the financing needs of emerging sectors.

A key area of focus could be improving the flow of credit to small businesses, farmers, startups and other productive sectors. Greater access to affordable and timely credit is considered important for employment generation and inclusive economic development.

Digital banking is also expected to receive significant attention. India has witnessed rapid growth in digital payments and technology-driven financial services in recent years. The proposed exercise could explore ways to further strengthen digital infrastructure while improving cybersecurity, consumer protection and financial literacy.

The panel may also assess how the banking sector can support major national priorities such as infrastructure development, manufacturing, renewable energy and innovation. With India targeting faster economic expansion over the coming decades, banks are expected to play a crucial role in mobilising savings and financing investment.

The government’s move is being viewed as part of a broader effort to prepare India’s financial institutions for the requirements of a larger and more complex economy. The recommendations of the panel could eventually shape policy and regulatory reforms in the banking sector.

The formal announcement, including the composition and mandate of the panel, is expected to provide greater clarity on the government’s roadmap for building a stronger and more future-ready banking system.

The initiative could become an important component of the broader “Viksit Bharat” agenda, with a focus on making the banking sector more resilient, technologically advanced, inclusive and capable of supporting India’s development ambitions.
