Kolkata witnessed a significant tightening of security around Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) strongrooms after a high-profile visit by Mamata Banerjee. The move comes amid growing political tensions, with members of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) staging protests over concerns related to the safety and transparency of stored voting equipment.
According to officials, additional layers of security have been deployed at multiple strongroom locations across the city. Armed personnel, surveillance systems, and restricted access protocols have been reinforced to ensure that the EVMs remain secure until the counting process begins.
The developments follow allegations raised by TMC leaders, who expressed apprehension about possible tampering or mishandling of the machines. The protests intensified after Banerjee personally inspected one of the facilities, urging election authorities to maintain strict vigilance and transparency.
Election Commission representatives have reassured all stakeholders that robust measures are already in place. They emphasized that the EVMs are stored under constant monitoring, with CCTV coverage and round-the-clock security provided by central forces.
Meanwhile, opposition parties have criticized the protests, calling them unnecessary and politically motivated. They argue that such actions could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
As the situation evolves, authorities continue to appeal for calm while ensuring that all democratic processes are carried out smoothly and securely.
