CHENNAI — The highly anticipated release of Suriya and Trisha Krishnan’s mass commercial entertainer Karuppu plunged into absolute chaos on Thursday, triggering widespread heartbreak across Tamil cinema. In a dramatic turn of events, director RJ Balaji released a highly emotional video message from his car, breaking down in tears as he apologized to legions of fans left stranded outside locked theatres.
The film, originally locked for a massive state-wide rollout on Thursday morning, faced sudden and absolute cancellation of its morning, afternoon, and eventually, evening shows due to a massive financial bottleneck behind the scenes.
“My Eyes Are Filled with Tears”
A visibly distraught RJ Balaji took to Instagram on Thursday afternoon to address the escalating crisis directly. Unable to hold back his tears, the filmmaker expressed profound guilt over the disruption.
“I am really sorry to all the fans. It shouldn’t have happened,” Balaji said, his voice cracking. “I know people travelled from long distances across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and other places to watch the 9 AM show. People watch movies to forget the worries in their lives, but instead, we have caused more disappointment and pressure.”
Refusing to give up hope during the broadcast, Balaji told fans he was actively “manifesting” a resolution, desperately eyeing a late 6:00 PM evening release. “I manifested that Karuppu would release today and become a blockbuster. A lot of people have let go of so many things. Suriya sir has done so much. I strongly believe that the film will release this evening. God is with us,” he added.
Inside the ₹50 Crore Financial Bottleneck
While the film’s team remained largely tight-lipped about the exact legal technicalities, industry insiders and theatre managements confirmed that the rollout was paralyzed by massive unpaid dues from the production house, Dream Warrior Pictures.
The KDM Blockade: Distributors withheld the Key Delivery Message (KDM)—the crucial digital security code required to play the movie file on theatre servers—until pending payments were cleared.
The Unsettled Debts: Reports indicate that the production house owes upwards of ₹50 crore to various financiers, exhibitors, and vendors. This includes unpaid location charges linked to Chennai’s EVP Studios, where part of the movie was shot.
Suriya Steps In: In a bid to rescue the film, lead actor Suriya reportedly stepped in personally to clear a chunk of the immediate local liabilities to help pacify distributors, though the sheer volume of the debt could not be cleared in a matter of hours.
Theatre owners, who bore the direct brunt of fan fury on a weekday morning, voiced deep frustration over the lack of communication.
“There’s no greater sin in cinema equivalent to wasted revenue potential and making fans suffer on a weekday morning by not giving clarity,” remarked Nikilesh Suriya, Managing Director of Chennai’s prominent Rohini Silver Screens.
Industry Rallies Around the Team
As news of Balaji’s emotional breakdown went viral, prominent voices from the South Indian film industry quickly rallied to offer public solidarity.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), superstar Dhanush wrote, “Suriya sir and Karuppu deserve a proper theatrical release. I really hope the issues get resolved and the film releases in theatres soon.” Filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj and actor Dulquer Salmaan also posted messages of support, urging Balaji and the crew to stay strong through the testing times.
The Silver Lining
Fortunately for eager audiences, the agonizing wait didn’t last forever. Following intense, overnight marathon negotiations, the financial hurdles were successfully cleared. Karuppu officially made its triumphant landing in cinemas the following morning, Friday, May 15.
Proving that the hype hadn’t dwindled, theatres across Tamil Nadu exploded with festival-like celebrations, with RJ Balaji, Karthi, and Trisha making surprise appearances at Chennai cinemas to celebrate the hard-fought first-day-first-show (FDFS) with ecstatic fans.
