MUMBAI — In a landmark moment for Indian cinephiles, Universal Pictures International has officially announced that visionary director Christopher Nolan will travel to Mumbai next month for the grand premiere of his highly anticipated action-fantasy epic, The Odyssey.
Marking the first time a Christopher Nolan film will host an official premiere in India, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker will not be alone. He is set to walk the red carpet alongside lead actors Matt Damon and Tom Holland, as well as Oscar-winning producer Emma Thomas.
Mumbai Joins the Global Stage
The star-studded Mumbai event places India’s entertainment capital directly alongside elite global film hubs like London, Paris, and New York on the movie’s exclusive promotional tour.
The premiere will be hosted at the PVR Icon IMAX at Phoenix Palladium in Lower Parel, Mumbai, ahead of the movie’s worldwide theatrical release on July 17, 2026.
While the exact date of the red-carpet event remains under wraps, anticipation is already reaching a fever pitch. Advance tickets for IMAX screenings across India went on sale earlier this month, sparking a massive frenzy that saw premium seats — priced as high as ₹3,300 — selling out within minutes.
A Technical and Mythological Spectacle
Written and directed by Nolan under his Syncopy banner, The Odyssey is a cinematic adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem. The film follows the treacherous, decade-long journey of Odysseus, the King of Ithaca (played by Matt Damon), as he battles sea monsters, vengeful gods, and enchantresses to reunite with his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and his son Telemachus (Tom Holland). The film boasts a massive ensemble cast, including Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron.
True to Nolan’s signature style, the production completely eschewed green screens and studio substitutes in favor of practical effects and real-world locations, including grueling shoots on the open ocean.
Speaking about the demanding production, Matt Damon recently remarked:
“It was by far the hardest movie I’ve ever made. Chris likes to shoot everything real. So there’s no kind of green screen, no faking it, no kind of studio stuff.”
Furthermore, The Odyssey cements itself in film history as the first feature film ever to be shot entirely using IMAX cameras, a technical milestone Nolan has reportedly spent nearly two decades working toward.
A Familiar Return for the Stars
While this marks a historic first for a Nolan movie premiere in India, the core team is no stranger to the country:
Christopher Nolan & Emma Thomas previously visited Mumbai in 2018 for a celluloid preservation campaign and shot crucial sequences of his 2020 sci-fi thriller Tenet in the city, as well as filming portions of The Dark Knight Rises (2012) in Jodhpur.
Matt Damon famously filmed scenes for The Bourne Supremacy in Goa back in 2004 and has frequently visited for his humanitarian work with Water.org.
Tom Holland last visited Mumbai in 2023 for the grand opening of the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC).
With The Odyssey tracking to be one of the biggest cinematic events of the decade, Mumbai is getting ready to give Hollywood royalty a massive welcome.
