Marvel fans have a huge reason to head back to movie theaters. The blockbuster smash hit Avengers: Endgame has returned to the big screen under the title Avengers: Endgame – Encore. This special release is not just a trip down memory lane—it features brand-new bonus footage that directly sets up Marvel’s next giant team-up movie, Avengers: Doomsday.
Director Anthony Russo, who directed Endgame and is co-directing Doomsday alongside his brother Joe Russo, explained how the two stories link together.
The Secret Bridge to Doomsday
Fans might wonder if Marvel went back and changed the classic movie. Russo made it clear that the original ending remains intact, but the extra footage adds fresh meaning to the story.
“We weren’t going to mess with what that movie is,” Russo explained in an interview with Marvel.com. Instead, the re-release includes extra scenes—especially on premium large-format screens like IMAX—that give viewers an exclusive sneak peek into what lies ahead.
During a post-screening question-and-answer session, Russo dropped a major hint about where the next movie begins. He pointed directly to the heartwarming scene where Steve Rogers (Captain America) travels back in time to live a quiet life with Peggy Carter.
“There’s certainly a pivotal moment in that film at the end where the moment has a different meaning,” Russo said. “We sort of play one beat past where Steve Rogers’ story ended with Peggy Carter, and in that moment, that’s sort of where Doomsday is born.”
Actions Have Consequences
When the Russo brothers originally shot Endgame, their main goal was simply to give the ten-year Infinity Saga an epic, satisfying finish. But as the filmmakers began planning the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they realized that the time-travel adventures in Endgame would create massive ripples across multiple timelines and universes.
Those timeline changes form the foundation for Avengers: Doomsday, which pits heroes from across different realities against a dangerous new threat.
Robert Downey Jr. Returns as Doctor Doom
The upcoming film also marks the dramatic return of Robert Downey Jr., but this time, he is not putting on the Iron Man armor. Instead, Downey stars as the iconic villain Victor Von Doom (Doctor Doom).
Russo shared that Downey was always their top pick for Doom, noting that audiences have a deep emotional bond with him from his years as Tony Stark. The directors hope to use that emotional connection to take the Marvel Universe into surprising and darker territory.
