NEW DELHI — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Friday, September 11, 2026, on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. During the bilateral discussions, Modi strongly underscored the necessity of protecting the freedom of navigation, securing commercial sea lanes, and ensuring the safety and well-being of seafarers.
The meeting marks Pezeshkian’s first visit to India since assuming the presidency. Against the backdrop of escalating conflict in West Asia, the Indian Prime Minister reiterated New Delhi’s consistent stance that ongoing geopolitical disputes must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
According to a readout from the Ministry of External Affairs, Modi emphasized the need for sustained efforts to bring lasting peace and stability to the region. The safety of maritime routes has been a growing concern for India, which is one of the world’s largest suppliers of seafarers, following a series of recent disruptions and attacks on merchant vessels in critical chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz.
Beyond regional security, the two leaders focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation. President Pezeshkian noted that the discussions were highly productive and would serve to further ties between the two nations, particularly in the sectors of energy and trade.
Prime Minister Modi also thanked Iran for its active, high-level participation in BRICS meetings despite challenging global circumstances, highlighting the bloc’s potential to build resilience, innovation, and sustainability across the Global South.
