India Fast-Tracks Power Supply to Flood-Hit Nepal in Emergency Move

Source The Hindu

In a swift humanitarian response to the devastating floods in Nepal, India has approved the expedited export of electricity to its neighboring country, aiming to stabilize essential services and support ongoing relief efforts. The decision comes as large parts of Nepal continue to grapple with widespread flooding caused by heavy monsoon rains, which have disrupted infrastructure, displaced thousands, and severely impacted power supply systems.

Officials from India’s Ministry of Power confirmed that the move was cleared on priority, allowing additional electricity to flow into Nepal through existing cross-border transmission lines. The emergency supply is expected to help restore critical services such as hospitals, water supply systems, and communication networks that have been severely affected by prolonged power outages.

Nepal has been facing significant challenges after floodwaters damaged key hydropower plants and transmission infrastructure. With domestic electricity generation capacity compromised, the country urgently required external support to meet its energy demands. India, being Nepal’s largest energy partner, responded promptly by facilitating increased electricity export under a fast-track mechanism.

Sources indicate that technical teams from both countries have been working closely to ensure smooth transmission and grid stability. The coordination highlights the strength of bilateral cooperation, especially in times of crisis. India and Nepal share a robust power trade agreement, which has enabled the seamless transfer of electricity in the past as well.

The Indian government emphasized that the decision reflects its commitment to regional cooperation and disaster assistance. “India stands firmly with Nepal during this difficult time. Ensuring access to electricity is critical for relief and recovery operations,” an official statement noted.

On the ground in Nepal, authorities have welcomed the move, stating that the additional power supply will significantly ease pressure on emergency services. Relief agencies have also pointed out that electricity is vital for operating shelters, managing logistics, and providing medical care to affected communities.

The floods, triggered by incessant rainfall, have caused extensive damage across several districts in Nepal. Roads, bridges, and homes have been washed away, leaving many communities isolated. Rescue operations are ongoing, with both local agencies and international partners working to provide aid and rehabilitation support.

India has a history of extending assistance to Nepal during natural disasters, including earthquakes and floods. The current decision to expedite electricity exports adds to a series of relief measures that India may extend in the coming days, depending on Nepal’s evolving needs.

Experts believe that such cooperation not only strengthens diplomatic ties but also underscores the importance of regional energy integration. As climate-related disasters become more frequent, collaborative mechanisms like cross-border power trade can play a crucial role in ensuring resilience and rapid response.

With the additional electricity now being supplied, authorities in Nepal hope to gradually restore normalcy in affected areas. However, the scale of destruction means that long-term recovery efforts will require sustained support and coordination.

The situation remains critical, but India’s timely intervention has provided a much-needed boost to Nepal’s emergency response capabilities, reinforcing the spirit of partnership between the two nations.
