A Shaky Start for Team India
It was a night of high drama at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur. Fans expected a smooth ride for the Indian women’s cricket team in their first T20 match against Zimbabwe. Smriti Mandhana, stepping up for her first game as India’s full-time captain, won the toss and chose to bowl first.
At the start, everything seemed fine. But when it was time for India to bat and chase a modest target of 115 runs, things went terribly wrong. The Zimbabwe bowlers came out firing and shocked the home crowd. Within the first four overs, India had lost four major wickets for just 19 runs. The top-order batters could not handle the pressure, and suddenly, a simple chase turned into a massive mountain to climb. The visiting team, who had lost all of their previous eighteen T20 matches this year, suddenly looked ready to pull off a historic upset.
The Rescue Mission: Deepti and Niki Save the Day
Just when the situation looked completely out of hand, experienced all-rounder Deepti Sharma and young debutant Niki Prasad joined forces. Walking in with the team struggling at 19 for 4, they knew they had to stay calm and rebuild the innings. Instead of panicking, the duo focused on building a solid partnership.
Deepti took the lead, playing a brilliant counter-attacking game. She did not let the Zimbabwe bowlers settle and kept finding the boundaries. Her aggressive approach shifted the momentum back to India. She scored a fantastic 49 runs off just 37 balls. Though she fell just one run short of a well-deserved half-century, she had already done her job. Together, Deepti and Niki put up an incredible 82-run partnership for the fifth wicket, completely turning the match around.
A Dream Debut for Niki Prasad
For a young player making her international debut, walking into such a high-pressure situation could be a nightmare. But Niki Prasad showed nerves of steel. She stayed cool and supported Deepti beautifully. Niki scored an unbeaten 39 runs from 35 balls.
She carefully watched the ball, adapted to the wet outfield caused by heavy dew, and played the right shots at the right time. When India was just a few runs away, it was Niki who hit the winning boundary to finish the game with more than four overs to spare. Her 39 not out is now the third-highest score by an Indian woman on her T20 international debut.
Bowlers Set the Stage Early On
Earlier in the evening, the Indian bowlers did a great job to restrict Zimbabwe to 114 for 5 in their 20 overs. Nandani Sharma was the star with the ball, taking two wickets in the final over while giving away just 11 runs in her spell. World Number One bowler N Shree Charani was also very tight, giving up only 14 runs in her overs. For Zimbabwe, Kelis Ndhlovu scored 42, and Sharne Mayers added a strong 43 not out, but they fell just short of a bigger total.
Thanks to the amazing partnership between Deepti and Niki, Captain Mandhana started her new role with a hard-fought four-wicket win. This victory gives India a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20 series. The team will now look forward to fixing their early batting mistakes before the next game. For now, fans are just happy to celebrate a thrilling win that proved the fighting spirit of Indian women’s cricket.
