Indian Mission Tracks Odesa Ship Strike as Two Nationals Remain Unaccounted For

Source The Hindu

New Delhi: The Indian Embassy in Ukraine is closely monitoring the situation after a vessel carrying Indian nationals was struck at the Odesa port, raising concerns over the safety of those on board. According to official sources, four Indians were present on the ship at the time of the incident. While two have been confirmed safe, the fate of the remaining two individuals is still unknown.

The incident occurred amid escalating tensions in the region, where port infrastructure has increasingly come under threat. Ukrainian authorities have not yet released detailed information about the nature of the strike, but initial reports suggest that the vessel sustained significant damage, prompting emergency response efforts.

In a statement issued shortly after the news broke, the Indian Embassy said it is in constant touch with Ukrainian officials, port authorities, and other relevant agencies to gather accurate information and ensure the safety of Indian citizens. “We are closely monitoring the situation and are making all possible efforts to ascertain the well-being of the remaining crew members,” the embassy stated.

Family members of the missing individuals in India have been informed, and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has assured them of all possible support. The MEA is also coordinating with international partners to facilitate rescue and search operations, if required.

Sources indicate that the two Indians who have been confirmed safe are currently under medical observation. Though they reportedly sustained minor injuries, their condition is stable. Authorities are working to evacuate them to a safer location once conditions permit.

The attack on the vessel highlights the growing risks faced by commercial shipping in the Black Sea region, particularly near Ukrainian ports like Odesa, which have been critical for grain exports and international trade. Several shipping companies have already raised concerns over safety and insurance risks, as hostilities continue to disrupt maritime routes.

This is not the first time Indian nationals have been caught in conflict zones abroad. The government has repeatedly urged Indian citizens to exercise caution and adhere to advisories issued by embassies in sensitive regions. In recent months, the MEA has intensified efforts to track Indians working in high-risk areas, particularly in sectors such as shipping and construction.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian emergency services have launched a search and rescue operation near the site of the strike. However, challenging conditions, including debris and ongoing security threats, are reportedly hampering efforts.

Diplomatic channels remain active, with India maintaining close communication with Ukrainian authorities. Officials say further updates will be shared as more information becomes available.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the vulnerabilities faced by foreign nationals in conflict-affected regions. As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on locating the two missing Indians and ensuring the safety of all those affected.

The Indian government has reiterated its commitment to the safety of its citizens abroad and has urged calm while efforts continue on the ground.
