Karnataka Seeks Urgent Central Support Amid Financial Concerns, Says CM Shivakumar

Source Deccan Herald

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar has made a strong appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Centre to extend financial assistance to the state, emphasizing the need for immediate intervention to address mounting economic challenges.

Speaking to the media, Shivakumar highlighted the financial strain faced by Karnataka and called on the Union government to adopt a more supportive approach. “We request the Prime Minister to be generous and help save Karnataka. The state is going through a difficult phase and requires timely assistance,” he said.

Concerns Over Financial Stability

The Chief Minister pointed out that Karnataka has been facing revenue-related issues, which have impacted the implementation of welfare schemes and infrastructure projects. He stressed that despite being one of the country’s leading contributors to the national economy, the state has not received adequate financial backing from the Centre.

Shivakumar also referred to delays in the release of funds and claimed that such setbacks have hindered developmental activities. He urged the Centre to ensure the timely disbursal of dues and provide additional grants to help the state maintain its growth momentum.

Centre-State Relations in Focus

The appeal has once again brought the issue of Centre-State financial relations into the spotlight. Karnataka officials argue that a fair share of tax revenues and grants is crucial for sustaining development, especially in a state with growing urban and rural demands.

Political observers note that such requests are not uncommon, but the tone of urgency in Shivakumar’s statement reflects the seriousness of the situation. The Chief Minister reiterated that his appeal was made in the interest of the people and not driven by political considerations.

Call for Cooperative Federalism

Shivakumar emphasized the importance of cooperative federalism, urging the Union government to work closely with states to ensure balanced development across the country. He stated that Karnataka remains committed to contributing to national progress but requires equitable support to continue its trajectory.

As the situation unfolds, all eyes are now on the Centre’s response to Karnataka’s request. Whether additional financial aid will be granted remains to be seen, but the appeal underscores the ongoing challenges faced by states in managing fiscal pressures.

Awaiting Central Response

The Union government has yet to issue an official response to Shivakumar’s remarks. However, the development is likely to spark further discussions on fiscal policies and the distribution of resources between the Centre and states.

For now, Karnataka continues to seek urgent relief, with its leadership hoping for a positive and timely decision from New Delhi.
