ST. PETERSBURG — Russian President Vladimir Putin has strongly defended India’s geopolitical autonomy, warning Western powers that any attempt to leverage “threats of sanctions” against New Delhi would “boomerang immediately” under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Speaking at the annual St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Putin characterized India as a fiercely independent player on the world stage that refuses to be swayed by external coercion.
“India always acts as a sovereign country, and under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, any potential threats of sanctions would boomerang immediately,” Putin said, responding to queries regarding potential Western backlash over New Delhi’s ongoing economic and military ties with Moscow.
A Subtle Nod to the Past
In a notable moment during the forum, Putin recalled the period before 2014 when Modi was barred from entering the United States due to diplomatic restrictions, contrasting it with the reality of modern global alignments.
“We all remember the time when Prime Minister Modi was banned from going to the territory of the United States of America,” Putin observed. “Now that he is the Prime Minister, all the sanctions have been eliminated, and the relationship between the US and India is developing successfully.”
Putin added that he was confident the Indian Prime Minister “will never forget about it,” pointing to the scenario as proof of India’s capacity to outlast foreign pressure and successfully dictate its own diplomatic terms.
Choosing Independence in Defense
The Russian President’s remarks come amid lingering speculation over whether India could face punitive measures from Washington under mechanisms like CAATSA (Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act). Such threats typically loom over New Delhi’s potential acquisition of next-generation Russian hardware, including the S-500 air defense platform or the Sukhoi Su-57 fifth-generation stealth fighter jet.
Brushing aside these concerns, Putin insisted that India’s procurement strategies are governed strictly by domestic utility and economic sense rather than foreign diktats.
“India is a sovereign country, and it is free to choose those products that they consider to be most up to date and most applicable for them and obviously offering the best price-quality ratio,” Putin said. “No matter what people say, India has always been acting in this manner.”Beyond Buyer and Seller
While acknowledging that New Delhi has actively sought to diversify its defense hardware pipeline in recent years, Putin emphasized that the core of Russia-India military cooperation remains remarkably distinct. He highlighted that the relationship has shifted away from a basic transactional structure toward deep technological collaboration.
