Making It at Home: India Pushes to Build Vital Tech and Magnets Locally

Source money control

India is taking major steps to make essential products at home rather than depending heavily on foreign suppliers. Emphasizing this shift, Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das highlighted that building local strength in sectors where the country relies heavily on imports is key to protecting the economy from global disruptions.

A central highlight of this push is the production of rare-earth permanent magnets—vital components powering modern clean energy and everyday gadgets.

Why Rare-Earth Magnets Matter

Rare-earth permanent magnets may sound complicated, but they are essentially super-strong magnets that run critical modern equipment. Without them, several key technologies cannot function:

Electric vehicles (EVs): They drive the motors that make electric cars and two-wheelers run.

Wind energy: Giant wind turbines use them to turn breezes into clean electricity.

Everyday electronics: Smartphones, laptops, medical scanners, and home appliances rely on them to stay compact and efficient.

Currently, India imports almost all of these specialized magnets, making local industries vulnerable whenever global supply chains face bottlenecks or geopolitical tensions.

What the Government Is Doing

To fix this vulnerability, the central government has rolled out targeted support packages to jumpstart domestic factories:

Financial boost: A dedicated multi-thousand-crore incentive scheme has been cleared to help companies set up local manufacturing facilities.

Capacity targets: The goal is to scale domestic output to thousands of tonnes each year by 2030, drastically cutting reliance on foreign imports.

Securing raw minerals: State agencies are stepping up exploration and refining of critical minerals across the country to feed local factories directly.

Shielding the Economy Against Global Shocks

Das noted that this self-reliance push extends beyond magnets into other import-heavy essentials, including energy and fertilizers.

When a country produces its own critical components, local factories face fewer shutdowns, domestic jobs are created, and costs remain predictable. By building these capabilities at home, India is positioning itself not only to protect its own growth, but also to emerge as a reliable alternative supplier for the world.
