Indian wrestler Manisha Bhanwala has created history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the senior World Wrestling Championships. However, behind her historic victory lies an emotional story of family sacrifice, personal loss and a promise she never forgot.
The 29-year-old wrestler defeated American wrestler Abigail Nette 8-6 in the 59kg final in Astana, Kazakhstan. What made the victory even more special was the way Manisha celebrated it. Instead of simply showing her gold medal, she held up a white T-shirt featuring photographs of her late parents.
A Tragic Day That Changed Her Life
Manisha’s journey was not easy. Her father, Suresh Bhanwala, passed away in 2022 after suffering a cardiac arrest. At that time, she was preparing to travel to Mongolia for the Asian Championships.
His sudden death left Manisha heartbroken. She was deeply attached to her family and even thought about leaving wrestling.
However, her family members reminded her of the sacrifices her father had made to support her sporting career. They encouraged her to continue wrestling and fulfil his dream.
Her brother Rinku played an important role in motivating her during this difficult period. Manisha eventually travelled to Mongolia and returned with a bronze medal.
A Promise That Kept Her Going
After losing her father, Manisha’s biggest motivation became fulfilling his dream of seeing her succeed in wrestling.
Before leaving for the World Championships, she prepared a special white T-shirt with photographs of her parents. She wanted to win the gold medal and show their pictures to the world.
Her brother revealed that Manisha was determined to make this moment special for her parents and the entire family.
After winning the final, she kept her promise by proudly displaying the T-shirt during her celebrations.
An Incredible Comeback in the Final
Manisha’s performance in the final was equally impressive. She faced a strong challenge from American wrestler Abigail Nette and was trailing by six points.
However, she refused to give up and made a stunning comeback in the second period. With determination and excellent wrestling skills, she turned the match around and secured an 8-6 victory.
The win made her the first Indian woman to become a senior World Wrestling Championships gold medallist.
From a Haryana Village to the World Stage
Manisha comes from a farming family in Jind, Haryana. Her interest in sports developed after watching her elder brother Rinku play kabaddi in their village.
She later chose wrestling and worked hard to build her career. Over the years, she competed in different weight categories, including 62kg, 65kg and 57kg, before achieving her biggest success in the 59kg category.
Her journey shows how determination, family support and hard work can help someone overcome even the toughest challenges.
For Manisha, this gold medal is much more than a sporting achievement. It is a tribute to her late father, whose dream and support continue to inspire her.
