SECUNDERABAD — Facing a volatile global energy market triggered by the escalating US-Iran conflict, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday made a direct appeal to the nation to adopt a “war-footing” approach to resource conservation. Addressing a massive gathering in Telangana, the Prime Minister framed fuel austerity and the suspension of non-essential foreign spending as paramount duties in the current “national interest.”

The Return of the Pandemic Playbook

Recalling the logistical shifts made during the COVID-19 pandemic, PM Modi suggested that the corporate sector and citizens should revive hybrid work models to drastically cut down on daily commutes.

“During the Corona period, we developed systems for work-from-home, online meetings, and video conferences,” the Prime Minister noted. “Today, the need of the hour is to restart those practices. Gold Moratorium: In a move to further stabilize the rupee, he requested a temporary pause on non-essential gold purchases, citing the heavy drain on foreign exchange.

Commuter Shifts: Residents in urban centers were encouraged to prioritize Metro rail, carpooling, and electric vehicles (EVs).

“Patriotism is not only about sacrificing one’s life for the nation at the border; it is also about living responsibly and fulfilling duties towards the country during difficult economic times.” — Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Infrastructure and Energy Independence

While calling for immediate restraint, the Prime Minister also highlighted the government’s long-term push for energy security. During his visit to Secunderabad, he inaugurated development projects worth ₹9,400 crore, emphasizing India’s progress in:

Solar Energy: Positioning India as a global leader in renewable generation.

Ethanol Blending: Reducing the volume of neat petrol required for vehicles.

Natural Gas Expansion: Expanding piped gas and CNG networks to move away from liquid fuel dependency.

The Prime Minister’s remarks serve as a precursor to potential price adjustments, as analysts predict a hike in domestic fuel prices before mid-May if the
