New Delhi: The death of a young software professional in Noida after his car plunged into a water-filled drain has triggered a sharp political reaction, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi calling the incident a symbol of India’s “urban collapse” caused by a lack of accountability.
In a post on social media, Gandhi said the tragedy highlighted the failure of urban governance and questioned the absence of responsibility among authorities. He alleged that poor planning, unsafe infrastructure, and negligence by civic agencies were putting ordinary citizens’ lives at risk on a daily basis. “This is not an accident, it is a consequence of systemic neglect and zero accountability,” he said.
The incident occurred earlier this week when the techie’s vehicle fell into an open, rain-filled drain in Noida. Rescue efforts were delayed, and the victim was later declared dead, sparking outrage among residents and on social media. Videos and eyewitness accounts from the scene have raised questions about safety measures, warning signs, and emergency response time.
Gandhi extended condolences to the victim’s family and demanded strict action against those responsible. He urged governments at all levels to prioritize citizen safety, invest in resilient urban infrastructure, and ensure that officials are held answerable for lapses.
The ruling establishment, however, rejected the criticism, stating that an inquiry had been ordered and corrective steps were being taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
