In a strong show of dissent against rising living costs, the Congress party on Saturday staged protests in several parts of the country, targeting the recent hikes in fuel and milk prices. Party leaders and workers gathered in large numbers, accusing the government of ignoring the struggles of ordinary citizens.
During the demonstrations, Congress leaders highlighted the growing financial burden on households, claiming that essential commodities have become increasingly unaffordable. Some protesters used symbolic imagery—such as bullock carts—to underline what they described as a “regression” in economic conditions, arguing that soaring fuel prices are forcing people to abandon modern transport.
Senior party members alleged that the continuous rise in petrol and diesel prices has had a cascading effect on the cost of daily necessities, including milk. They argued that transportation costs have surged, directly impacting supply chains and retail prices. According to them, middle- and lower-income families are bearing the brunt of this inflationary pressure.
The protests were marked by slogans against the central government, with demonstrators demanding immediate intervention to control prices. Congress leaders called for a rollback of fuel taxes and measures to stabilize the prices of essential commodities.
Meanwhile, government representatives have maintained that global factors, including fluctuations in crude oil prices and supply disruptions, are contributing to the current situation. Officials have also pointed to ongoing welfare schemes aimed at supporting vulnerable sections of society.
The issue of rising prices is expected to remain a major political flashpoint, with opposition parties likely to intensify their campaign in the coming weeks.
