In a development that could reshape regional geopolitics, Pakistan has opened multiple overland trade routes to Iran, potentially weakening the effectiveness of the United States’ naval blockade imposed earlier this month. The move has sparked debate over Islamabad’s dual role as both a mediator and a facilitator in the ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran.
According to reports, Pakistan—under the influence of Army Chief Asim Munir—has operationalised six land corridors allowing goods to reach Iran through its territory. The routes, formalised under a new transit framework, connect key ports such as Karachi, Gwadar, and Port Qasim with border crossings like Taftan and Gabd, creating an alternative to restricted maritime channels.
The timing is significant. The United States, led by President Donald Trump, has enforced a sweeping naval blockade targeting Iranian trade through the Strait of Hormuz as part of a broader pressure campaign. The blockade aims to limit Tehran’s economic activity and force negotiations over its nuclear and regional policies.
However, Pakistan’s new land routes offer Iran a workaround, enabling stranded cargo to continue moving despite maritime restrictions. This development could dilute the intended impact of US sanctions and complicate Washington’s strategy to isolate Iran economically.
Analysts have described the move as a “strategic contradiction.” While Pakistan has positioned itself as a mediator in US-Iran tensions, even hosting talks and facilitating back-channel diplomacy, its decision to allow transit trade to Iran appears to undercut the same pressure tactics it is helping negotiate around.
Critics argue that this reflects a broader pattern in Pakistan’s foreign policy—balancing relationships with competing powers to maximise its own strategic autonomy. Islamabad continues to maintain ties with the US for security and financial cooperation, while also engaging with regional partners and providing economic channels that serve its national interests.
The implications for US-Pakistan relations remain uncertain. While Washington may view the move as undermining its sanctions regime, Pakistan could defend it as a legal trade facilitation measure rather than a political stance.
