NEW DELHI — Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the nationwide “Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan” virtually on Sunday, calling on India’s youth to steer clear of substance abuse and serve as the driving force behind the nation’s goal of becoming a developed country by 2047.
Addressing a massive gathering of over one crore young citizens connected across more than 28,000 locations—including students, volunteers, spiritual groups, and representatives of Gen Z—PM Modi emphasized that physical and mental fitness among the youth is essential for India’s long-term progress.
“You are the Amrit Peedhi of India. Over the next 20 to 25 years, you will shape your own lives, and by 2047, it is you who will lead India to the pinnacle of a developed nation. The country needs your energy, imagination, and talent, making it vital for you to stay away from destructive habits like drugs,” the Prime Minister stated.
Key Pillars of the Anti-Drug Drive
100-Week Mass Participation (Jan Bhagidari): The campaign kicks off a 100-week nationwide movement. Every Sunday, local communities, educational institutions, and NGOs will host activities such as walkathons, sports tournaments, street plays, meditation sessions, and art competitions to spread awareness.
Exposing Foreign Drug Networks: PM Modi warned that drug supply lines are part of a targeted “terror-driven agenda” by hostile nations seeking to destabilize India by addicting its young population.
Ending Social Stigma: The Prime Minister urged families not to hide addiction out of concern for social prestige. He encouraged early medical intervention, open communication, and community support, calling individuals who overcome addiction “true warriors” who deserve respect and a second chance.
Intensified Law Enforcement: Highlighting the government’s zero-tolerance policy against drug syndicates, PM Modi noted that enforcement agencies have significantly increased arrests and seized illegal narcotics worth thousands of crores of rupees in recent years.
Grassroots Reach & National Rollout
Building upon the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan first introduced in 2020, the updated national initiative integrates youth organizations such as My Bharat volunteers, the National Service Scheme (NSS), youth clubs, and over 125 spiritual and social organizations.
Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya noted that the campaign draws heavily on the “Kashi Declaration,” a collaborative roadmap prepared by civil society organizations following a pilot program in Varanasi.
PM Modi concluded by encouraging young people to protect their future potential: “Drugs can give you a high for a short time, but they bring your career and personal life to a bottom low. Let us step forward together over the next 100 Sundays to build a drug-free, strong, and self-reliant India.”
