KOLKATA / NEW DELHI — The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has officially withdrawn the Indian men’s national football team from the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup to prioritize a high-profile international friendly against five-time World Cup champions Brazil.
The decision comes after a logistical and regulatory impasse made competing in both events during the September–October FIFA international window impossible.
A Direct Conflict of Schedules
India had originally accepted FIFA’s invitation to participate in the ASEAN Cup in Indonesia—scheduled from September 21 to October 6—where they were drawn in Group A alongside host nation Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. However, the AIFF subsequently finalized a landmark home friendly against Brazil set for October 3 at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium (Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan).
With the ASEAN Cup final scheduled for October 4, participating in both events created an impossible timeline.

Technical Hurdles & The Two-Team Plan
The AIFF Executive Committee had initially explored fielding two distinct squads—a senior national team for the Brazil match and a secondary or developmental squad for the ASEAN Cup. However, that proposal hit regulatory roadblocks:
FIFA Mandatory Rules: Regulations governing FIFA-sanctioned tournaments mandate that member associations field their full-strength, senior national squads.
No Reserve Side Option: FIFA explicitly prohibits entering second-string or U-23 teams into full international senior competitions under a member association’s main banner.
Facing potential sanctions and technical forfeits, the AIFF opted to pull out of the regional tournament altogether.
High Glamour vs. Competitive Grind
The decision has sparked debate within the Indian football community. Critics, including former Indian national captain Bhaichung Bhutia, argued that competing in the ASEAN Cup provided vital competitive exposure against Asian peers at a similar FIFA ranking tier.
However, federation officials emphasized the rarity and magnitude of playing a top-five ranked world powerhouse on home soil.
Once-in-a-Lifetime Exposure: AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey noted that while India frequently meets Southeast Asian opponents like Malaysia and Singapore, an opportunity to test themselves against Brazil is exceptionally rare.
Alternative Friendlies in the Works: To compensate for missing up to four matches in the ASEAN Cup, the AIFF is actively attempting to line up additional international friendlies during the same window, with teams such as Iran and Cabo Verde under discussion.
Looking Ahead
The AIFF has formally notified FIFA regarding its withdrawal, hoping to avoid financial or administrative penalties by citing the unavoidable scheduling conflict. Attention in Kolkata now turns toward October 3, where nearly 100,000 fans are expected at Salt Lake Stadium to witness one of the biggest fixtures in modern Indian football history.
