Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were detained by Delhi Police on Wednesday during a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the ongoing revision of voter lists. The action came as opposition leaders and Congress workers continued their campaign in central Delhi.
Opposition Leaders Take to the Streets
The protest was led by Rahul Gandhi along with several INDIA bloc leaders. The opposition has been demanding the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar over alleged problems in the revision of electoral rolls.
The protesters attempted to move towards Jantar Mantar, but police stopped them and detained several leaders. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi were among those taken into custody.
The opposition says the voter-list revision could affect voters and has raised questions about the fairness of the election process. The Election Commission and the BJP have rejected the allegations.
Bus Carrying Rahul Gandhi Gets Punctured
The protest took an unexpected turn after Rahul Gandhi was placed in a police bus. Congress workers reportedly punctured the tyres of one of the buses carrying detained protesters.
The incident briefly delayed the movement of the bus and added another dramatic moment to an already tense protest. Rahul Gandhi was later shifted to another bus and taken towards a police station.
The unusual incident quickly drew attention as videos and reports from the protest spread online.
Priyanka Gandhi Also Detained
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was also detained along with her brother. The two leaders have remained at the centre of the Congress-led protests against the Election Commission.
The latest detention came just a day after Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi were detained following a long sit-in at Akashvani Bhawan. The previous protest lasted several hours after opposition leaders were stopped from reaching the Election Commission office.
Congress Says Protest Will Continue
The Congress has said it will continue raising questions over the voter-list revision and demanding accountability from the Election Commission.
The repeated protests and detentions have increased political tension in Delhi, with the opposition accusing the government and election authorities of ignoring its concerns. The Election Commission, however, has denied wrongdoing.
With Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders again taking to the streets, the issue is likely to remain a major political flashpoint in the days ahead.
