KOLKATA — Defying political tension and scorching heat, West Bengal witnessed a historic surge in civic participation on Thursday as the first phase of the 2026 Assembly Elections concluded with a staggering estimated voter turnout of 92.35%.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has hailed this figure as the highest-ever polling percentage recorded in the state since Independence.
A State in the Queue
Polling began at 7:00 a.m. across 152 constituencies spread over 16 districts. By midday, it was clear that the state was on track for a landmark day, with long queues snaking outside booths from the tea gardens of North Bengal to the politically charged belts of Murshidabad.
According to data released by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Bengal:
Dakshin Dinajpur led the state with a peak turnout of 95.22%.
Cooch Behar followed closely at 95.17%.
Birbhum recorded a robust 94.19%.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar praised the electorate, stating, “The ECI salutes each voter of West Bengal for this unprecedented democratic exercise.”
Key Drivers of the Surge
Political analysts suggest two primary factors contributed to this “bumper” turnout:
Special Intensive Revision (SIR): The voter list was recently pruned, removing over 91 lakh names. This statistical cleanup naturally increased the percentage of active, participating voters relative to the total registered list.
High-Stakes Rivalry: The fierce battle between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has led to intense ground-level mobilization, driving even reluctant voters to the booths.
Sporadic Clashes and Security
While the overall process was described as smooth by the ECI, the day was not without friction. Reports of sporadic violence emerged from areas like Purulia and Malda.
In Malda, a BJP candidate’s car was reportedly vandalized, with allegations of voter intimidation.
In Purulia, minor clashes were reported between villagers and central forces.
The ECI deployed nearly 900 companies of central paramilitary forces to ensure security across the 152 seats.
What Lies Ahead?
This first phase has decided the electoral fate of 1,478 candidates. The remaining 142 seats across seven districts will go to the polls in the second and final phase on April 29, 2026.
The entire nation now looks toward May 4, 2026, when the counting of votes will reveal whether the record turnout signals a mandate for continuity or a demand for change.
