Rome Diamond League: Rumesh Pathirage Shatters Records with Mind-Boggling 92.62m Throw

ROME — Sri Lanka’s rising javelin sensation, Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, stunned the global athletics community on Thursday evening, unleashing a massive 92.62m throw at the Rome Diamond League to claim his maiden Diamond League title and fundamentally shift the balance of power in Asian athletics.

With his spectacular second-round effort, the 23-year-old became only the fourth Asian athlete in history to breach the elusive 90-meter barrier. In doing so, he surpassed the personal best of Indian superstar and former Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra (90.23m), vaulting into second place on the all-time Asian list.

A Historic Night in the Eternal City

Pathirage entered the Stadio Olimpico already holding the 2026 world-leading mark from a domestic throw in March, but few predicted the absolute masterclass he would put on against an elite 10-man field.

After opening with a highly respectable 84.49m, Pathirage perfectly calibrated his run-up and release on his second attempt. The spear flew deep into the Roman night sky, landing at 92.62m—shattering the 20-year-old meeting record of 90.34m previously held by Norwegian legend Andreas Thorkildsen.

“I tried my best today to set a national record, and I managed to improve it by three meters,” a jubilant Pathirage said after the event. “The weather in Rome was good and felt like ideal conditions in which to throw far. Winning today felt like a Sri Lankan festival.”

The effort was so dominant that none of his competitors could cross the 85-meter mark. Two-time world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada finished a distant second with a best throw of 83.91m, while USA’s Curtis Thompson claimed third with 83.89m. India’s Sachin Yadav, making his Diamond League debut, struggled to find his rhythm and finished eighth with a best effort of 79.18m.

Where Pathirage’s Throw Stands

Pathirage’s monstrous effort rewrote multiple record books simultaneously, cementing his status as a legitimate gold-medal contender for the upcoming major championships.

Milestone Context

All-Time Asian Standing 2nd longest in history (Trailing only Arshad Nadeem’s 92.97m Olympic record)

World All-Time List 8th longest distance ever recorded in men’s javelin history

2026 Season Lead 1st in the world (Holding the top two furthest throws of the year)

Rome Diamond League New Meeting Record (Shattered the previous 2006 record by 2.28 meters).

From Fast-Bowling Prodigy to Javelin Icon

Pathirage’s journey to the top of track and field is highly unusual. Like most youngsters growing up in Sri Lanka, his first love was cricket. Blessed with a naturally powerful arm and a lithe frame, he was a lethal fast bowler at the under-18 level, clocking speeds of 134 km/h. In 2019, he even finished second-fastest nationwide in a prestigious fast-bowling talent hunt.

However, frustrated by the complexities and heavy competition of a team sport, Pathirage pivoted. Guided by his father—a former discus and shot-put athlete—he picked up the javelin full-time. His first competitive throw was a modest 30 meters. Within a few years of meticulous technical work, that number skyrocketed.

Fascinatingly, India’s Neeraj Chopra has served as both an inspiration and a mentor to the young Sri Lankan. After competing against each other in India, Chopra noticed Pathirage’s shyness in front of international media and famously advised him to speak confidently without fear.

Now, with a 92.62m throw under his belt, Pathirage will have to get used to the microphones. A thrilling three-way continental rivalry is locked in for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games later this year, as Pathirage, Chopra, and reigning Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem prepare to go head-to-head.
