Root Returns to Helm After Nightclub Incident Forces Stokes Out of Second Test

Source BBC

LONDON — In a dramatic turn of events, England Test captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson have been omitted from the squad for the upcoming second Test against New Zealand at The Oval. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed on Wednesday that former skipper Joe Root will step back into the leadership role as interim captain.

The bombshell decision comes in the wake of an ongoing investigation into a late-night incident. Following England’s commanding 115-run victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s, Stokes and Atkinson allegedly breached the team’s strict midnight curfew. The pair were reportedly present at a London nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning during an altercation in which a member of England’s security staff was struck by Saracens rugby player Totoa Auvaa.

In an official statement, the ECB announced:

“The England & Wales Cricket Board can confirm that, given the ongoing investigation, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson have not been made available for selection for the second Test against New Zealand, which starts at the Kia Oval on Wednesday 17 June. Yorkshire batter Joe Root will lead the team as interim captain.”

Why Root Over Vice-Captain Brook?

While 27-year-old Harry Brook currently serves as England’s Test vice-captain and limited-overs skipper, the ECB opted for the veteran experience of Root to navigate the sudden storm. Speculation suggests the board wanted to protect Brook from excessive pressure, especially considering his own previous disciplinary fine regarding a late-night incident in Wellington last year.

Root, 35, returns to the captaincy for the first time since stepping down in 2022. He holds the record for leading England in the most Test matches (64 between 2017 and 2022). Since relinquishing the captaincy to focus on his batting, England’s all-time leading run-scorer has flourished, with his Test average jumping to nearly 55.

Re-Shuffled Squad and What’s Next

The off-field controversy casts a shadow over what was a stellar start to the summer series. The disciplinary omissions leave a massive void in the bowling attack, as Atkinson had just claimed a crucial five-wicket haul at Lord’s.

To bolster the 15-player squad, selectors have recalled express paceman Jofra Archer—marking his highly anticipated return to the Test setup after a side strain sidelined him in December 2025—alongside Essex batter Jordan Cox.
