MUMBAI — In a significant security breach just hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Mumbai, police arrested a 24-year-old man posing as an official from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) along with his armed bodyguard.
The suspect, identified as Rohan Parekh, was detained at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on Monday evening. Security personnel intercepted Parekh when he attempted to access the high-security venue using a forged PMO identity card.
According to the Mumbai Police, Parekh was accompanied by a man claiming to be his bodyguard, from whom a firearm was recovered. While the weapon was later found to be licensed, the suspicious nature of the forged documents led security staff to immediately hand the duo over to the police. Parekh has since been remanded to police custody until September 11.
The incident triggered an immediate security alert, occurring just a day before PM Modi was slated to inaugurate the Global Fintech Fest 2026 at the nearby Jio World Convention Centre. Authorities, however, clarified that the security breach appears to be an isolated incident with no direct threat to the Prime Minister’s itinerary.
The Mumbai Crime Branch has registered a First Information Report (FIR) and officially taken over the investigation. Detectives are currently interrogating the suspects to determine the motive behind the impersonation and to investigate how the men managed to bypass initial security layers in a heavily guarded zone.
