Shifting Skies: AVIC Profits Surge as J-10C Gains Global Traction Over Western Rivals

Source The eurasian time

BEIJING / ISLAMABAD — The global arms market is witnessing a significant tectonic shift as China’s Aviation Industry Corporation (AVIC) reports record-breaking financial growth, fueled by the combat debut and rising export profile of its J-10C “Vigorous Dragon” multirole fighter.

While Western stalwarts like the Dassault Rafale and Boeing F-15EX have long held the “cutting-edge” crown, recent geopolitical shifts and battlefield reports from the 2025 regional skirmishes have catapulted Chinese aerospace technology into the spotlight, challenging the long-standing dominance of European and American defense contractors.

Record Profits for Chengdu Aircraft

According to recent financial disclosures, AVIC Chengdu Aircraft Co. saw its revenue climb to 75.4 billion yuan ($11 billion) in 2025, a nearly 16% increase year-on-year. The momentum has only accelerated into 2026, with first-quarter sales reportedly surging by 80%.

Industry analysts point to a “validation effect” following the J-10C’s deployment in the May 2025 India-Pakistan conflict. While official accounts of air-to-air engagements remain a subject of intense debate between New Delhi and Islamabad, the reported performance of the J-10CE (the export variant) has served as a powerful marketing tool for Beijing.

The J-10C vs. The “Old Guard”

For decades, the Rafale and F-15 were considered the gold standard for non-stealth 4.5-generation fighters. However, the J-10C is successfully positioning itself as a more cost-effective alternative that does not sacrifice technological sophistication.

Advanced Sensors: The J-10C’s integration of the KLJ-7A AESA radar and the long-range PL-15 missile system has put it on par with Western BVR (Beyond Visual Range) capabilities.

The Price Point: Analysts estimate the J-10C costs significantly less per unit than the Rafale, making it an attractive “high-end” option for nations in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

Geopolitical Agnosticism: Unlike the F-15, which comes with stringent U.S. end-user monitoring and political strings, Chinese exports offer a “no-questions-asked” alternative for nations seeking to modernize their fleets without aligning strictly with NATO standards.

Global Interest Intensifies

The “combat-proven” tag has already triggered a wave of interest:

Indonesia: Following Boeing’s pivot away from certain F-15EX pursuits in the region, Jakarta has reportedly been evaluating the J-10C to fill its air superiority gaps.

Egypt and Iraq: Reports suggest Cairo and Baghdad are eyeing Chinese platforms as they look to diversify their inventories away from purely Western or Russian hardware.

The JF-17 Synergy: The success of the J-10C is also lifting its “smaller sibling,” the JF-17 Block III, which recently secured orders from the Libyan National Army and interest from Bangladesh.

A Market in Transition

Despite AVIC’s soaring profits, the Western “Big Three”—Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Dassault—are not standing still. India’s recent move to grant “Acceptance of Necessity” for 114 additional Rafale jets underscores that for major powers, the French jet remains the preferred choice for deep strategic integration.

However, the “myth of Western invincibility” is being tested. As AVIC ramps up production capacity and integrates more AI-driven avionics into the J-10 platform, the gap between “cutting-edge” Western tech and “affordable” Chinese alternatives is narrowing faster than many in Washington or Paris expected.

“The 2025 conflict was the catalyst,” says a defense industry analyst. “It proved that Chinese tech isn’t just for parades; it’s a viable, lethal contender in high-intensity modern warfare.”
