Senior advocate and politician Kapil Sibal has urged climate activist Sonam Wangchuk to call off his ongoing hunger strike, expressing concern over his deteriorating health and the apparent lack of response from the government.
Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite fast demanding greater constitutional safeguards and environmental protections for Ladakh, has drawn nationwide attention. His protest highlights key issues such as statehood, inclusion under the Sixth Schedule, and sustainable development in the fragile Himalayan region.
Reacting to the situation, Sibal stated that while Wangchuk’s cause is significant and deserves attention, continuing the hunger strike may not yield the desired outcome. “The government is not going to listen in this manner,” he said, suggesting that alternative forms of engagement and dialogue might be more effective.
The veteran leader emphasized the need to preserve Wangchuk’s health, noting that prolonged fasting could have serious consequences. He also questioned the Centre’s silence on the matter, adding that democratic governments should remain open to dialogue, especially when concerns are raised peacefully.
Meanwhile, supporters of Wangchuk continue to rally across various parts of the country, amplifying his demands on social media and through public demonstrations. Several civil society groups have also voiced their backing, urging the government to initiate talks.
As the hunger strike enters a critical phase, the focus remains on whether the Centre will respond to the growing pressure or if the protest will take a more serious turn in the coming days.
