Elon Musk’s company, SpaceX, has placed new limits on its Starlink satellite internet in Ukraine. This unexpected move is causing major problems for the Ukrainian military, specifically by disrupting their drone operations.
A Sudden Loss of Connection
Starlink has been a lifeline for Ukraine, providing crucial internet access since the start of the war. However, Ukrainian officials recently noticed a serious issue. Without any warning, SpaceX restricted the internet connection for military-grade Starlink dishes when they move at high speeds.
According to military teams on the ground, the connection drops for 10 to 20 seconds when drones fly at speeds of just 110 to 120 km/h (around 70 mph). Serhiy Beskrestnov, an adviser to the Ukrainian president, said this lack of warning led to the failure of several important missions because the drones became too hard to control.
Why Drones Matter for Ukraine
In this conflict, drones are not just toys; they are essential tools. Ukraine relies heavily on fast-moving, long-range drones to spot danger and strike enemy targets in occupied areas. Because these drones need a constant, strong internet connection to be guided properly, any drop in the Starlink signal can make a mission fail instantly.
Anger from Allies
The sudden restrictions have caused frustration far beyond Ukraine’s borders. Poland, which actually pays for Ukraine’s Starlink subscriptions, was quick to call out the move. Poland’s Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, directly challenged Elon Musk online, asking if he was “playing politics” with his products and warning that European customers are keeping a close watch.
So far, neither Elon Musk nor SpaceX has given a clear reason for these new speed limits. For now, Ukrainian forces are left trying to adapt to these sudden changes while fighting to protect their country.
