The Long Wait is Over: Brunson’s 45-Point Masterclass Ends Knicks’ 53-Year Title Drought

SAN ANTONIO — The New York Knicks are champions of the basketball world once again. Driven by a legendary, legacy-defining performance from point guard Jalen Brunson, the Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Saturday night, capturing the franchise’s first Larry O’Brien Trophy in 53 years.

With the victory at the Frost Bank Center, New York closed out the best-of-seven series 4–1, sparking wild celebrations from the hardwood in Texas all the way back to the packed streets surrounding Madison Square Garden.

Brunson Takes Over the Fourth

The Knicks entered the final frame trailing by seven points and looking vulnerable against a resilient Spurs defense. That is when Brunson completely took over.

The newly crowned Finals MVP scored 13 consecutive points for New York down the stretch, breaking the will of the Spurs. Brunson finished the night with a staggering 45 points on 14-of-27 shooting, adding three rebounds and three assists in 41 grueling minutes.

His 45-point explosion didn’t just win the game; it also broke the all-time Knicks franchise record for points in an NBA Finals game, eclipsing the legendary Willis Reed’s 38-point mark set against the Los Angeles Lakers in 1970.

“I have no words,” an emotional Brunson said during the on-court trophy celebration. “It’s everything I ever dreamed of… This is why I came to New York.”

The Gambler Wins Big

For Brunson, the championship is the ultimate validation of a historic sacrifice. In 2024, the guard left an unprecedented $113 million on the table during contract extensions, deliberately giving the Knicks management the financial flexibility required to construct a championship-caliber roster.

That sacrifice paved the way for the front office to surround him with elite talent, including his former Villanova teammates Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart. The “Nova Knicks” chemistry was on full display in Game 5, with Bridges chipping in 14 points and Hart delivering 13 points alongside his trademark gritty defense and rebounding.

The championship also serves as a beautiful family milestone. Brunson’s father, Rick Brunson—who played for the Knicks during their famous 1999 Finals run—is an assistant coach on the team.

A Historic Night for New York

The victory officially closes a painful chapter in New York sports history. The Knicks had not lifted the championship trophy since 1973, weathering more than five decades of heartbreak, rebuilding phases, and near-misses.

While the youthful San Antonio Spurs put up a valiant fight throughout the series—anchored by generational talent Victor Wembanyama—they simply had no answer for New York’s ultimate closer when the stakes were at their highest. Five decades of waiting dissolved in a chaotic, joyful heap of blue and orange jerseys at center court, cementing the 2025–26 Knicks in basketball immortality.
