Mumbai: In a tragic incident amid heavy monsoon rains, a man lost his life after accidentally falling into an uncovered manhole while reportedly using his mobile phone. The accident occurred on a waterlogged street, where visibility was severely reduced due to continuous rainfall.
According to local authorities, the victim was walking through a flooded area when he failed to notice the open manhole hidden beneath the accumulated rainwater. Eyewitnesses stated that the man appeared distracted by his phone moments before the incident, which may have contributed to the fatal misstep.
Rescue teams were immediately alerted and launched a search operation. After several hours, the man’s body was recovered from the drainage system. Officials confirmed that the cause of death was drowning.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns over civic safety and infrastructure management during the monsoon season in Mumbai. Residents have frequently complained about open drains, poor maintenance, and lack of proper warning signs in waterlogged areas.
Authorities have assured that an investigation is underway to determine responsibility and prevent such incidents in the future. Meanwhile, citizens are being urged to remain cautious, avoid using mobile phones while walking in flooded areas, and report any open manholes or hazards to local authorities.
This tragic event highlights the urgent need for improved urban safety measures as the city continues to face intense rainfall.
