Peace efforts in West Asia showed cautious progress as senior United States envoys arrived in Switzerland for renewed negotiations with Iran, even as tensions in the region remain volatile.
According to officials, US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have already reached Switzerland to prepare the groundwork for talks, while Vice President JD Vance expressed optimism that discussions are “on track.” The negotiations, which are expected to focus on nuclear issues and regional security, were initially delayed due to escalating violence in Lebanon.
The diplomatic push follows a preliminary agreement between Washington and Tehran aimed at ending months of conflict. A fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has been a key condition for advancing the talks, although sporadic clashes and airstrikes continue to threaten stability in the region.
Iranian officials have confirmed that their delegation is also heading to Switzerland, with expectations that discussions could begin soon if the ceasefire holds. Tehran has emphasized that sustained peace on the ground is essential before any long-term commitments can be finalized.
Meanwhile, uncertainty persists over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil route. While Iranian forces issued warnings about a potential closure, US authorities have denied any disruption, stating that shipping activity remains steady.
Vice President Vance, who may join the negotiations later, has indicated that early signs of compliance from Iran are encouraging. However, analysts caution that significant differences remain, particularly over sanctions relief and nuclear transparency.
