Kolkata: The ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal has sparked controversy after unusual patterns were detected in the list of deleted electors, raising concerns among political parties and civil society groups ahead of upcoming elections.
According to preliminary data accessed from district-level election offices, a disproportionately high number of voters have been removed from certain urban pockets and border districts during the revision process. In several constituencies, deletions appear to be clustered in specific localities rather than evenly spread, prompting questions about the criteria used for verification.
Election officials maintain that the deletions are part of a routine exercise aimed at cleaning the rolls by removing duplicate entries, deceased voters, and individuals who have permanently shifted residence. “The SIR process follows strict guidelines laid down by the Election Commission. Every deletion is backed by field verification and documentary evidence,” a senior official said, requesting anonymity.
However, opposition parties have alleged that the process lacks transparency. They claim that a significant number of genuine voters, particularly migrant workers, minority communities, and residents of densely populated urban areas, have found their names missing without prior notice. In some cases, voters reportedly learned about the deletion only when they attempted to verify their details online or approached local booth-level officers.
Data comparisons with previous electoral rolls show that while additions have also been made, the ratio of deletions to additions is unusually high in select Assembly segments. Political analysts note that such patterns, if not adequately explained, could undermine public confidence in the electoral process. “The concern is not about revision itself, but about whether the process is uniformly applied and adequately communicated,” said a Kolkata-based election expert.
The Chief Electoral Officer’s office has urged voters to check their status and file claims or objections within the stipulated timeframe. Officials emphasized that deleted names can be restored if valid documents are submitted during the grievance redressal window.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India is said to be closely monitoring the situation and may seek detailed reports from district administrations. With elections approaching, stakeholders across the spectrum are calling for greater transparency, clear public communication, and independent audits to ensure that no eligible voter is disenfranchised during the SIR exercise.
As scrutiny intensifies, the manner in which authorities address these concerns could play a crucial role in maintaining trust in West Bengal’s electoral machinery.
